Mrs. Amina Bouayach, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), welcomed the significant involvement of all actors in the project to restore the Tazmamart prison camp and turn it into a space for life. A space for a Moroccan society that successfully handles its painful memory and builds a new memory open to all. She also welcomed their commitment that reflects the high spirit of citizenship.
Mrs. Bouayach, together with Mr. Mustapha Ennouhi, Governor of Midelt Province, chaired a meeting of the Committee on following up the establishment of Tazmamart space on Friday 17 December 2021 in Midelt, Morocco.
At this meeting, she announced that the CNDH would document this pioneering and exemplary experience and this process which is marked by the convergence of the performance of various ministerial departments, territorial administrations and stakeholders involved in this project.
She also added that this document would be ready at the beginning of 2022 at the launching ceremony of this space.
In the same context, CNDH Chairperson stated that this exceptional and unprecedented experience would allow the transformation of Tazmamart space into a space of joy and life with all its social, cultural, economic and environmental dynamism, to be the first space to come into existence on the process of reconciliation and memory preservation.
Mrs. Bouayach stressed that the CNDH would collaborate with various partners to consolidate this major achievement by involving the local population, women and youth, in promoting the socio-cultural and economic actions of this space, as they are a priority to successfully achieve this project.
She also underlined the importance of this project as part of the following-up of the implementation of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission (IER) recommendations regarding the preservation of memory and non-repetition.
The CNDH Chairperson announced that the "Unit for the preservation of memory and the promotion of Moroccan history and its various tributaries" would hold its first meeting outside the CNDH headquarters, considering this action as a strong political and human rights sign to promote this region and lead to its openness in the future. Besides, the Unit members would visit the space and its facilities.
To be noted, the total cost of this project exceeds 18 million dirhams. The progress of this project reached 95% thanks to the commitment of all the relevant departments, while several cultural and social projects related to the health, youth and religion sectors would be completed at the end of December 2021.
