The National Human Rights Council (CNDH), represented by Mr. Elie Elbaz, CNDH member, delivered a statement on behalf of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) at the interactive debate with the Special Rapporteur (SP) on the rights of persons with disabilities (PWD) held on Monday 11 March 2024 as part of the 55th Session of Human Rights Council (HRC).
The GANHRI welcomed the report of the SP on the rights of PWD, highlighting her vision and priorities for the promotion and protection of the rights of PWD. The GANHRI underlined the importance of the participatory and inclusive approach adopted by the SP during her mandate, which emphazises on listening to PWD experiences.
As independent institutions with a broad human rights mandate, National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) worldwide play a fundamental role in defending the rights of PWD, added GANHRI, emphasizing NHRIs’ commitment to promoting inclusion, equality and dignity for all.
The GANHRI welcomed the key issues identified by the SP, which reflect the challenges faced by NHRIs in their daily work. It particularly welcomed NHRIs intention to continue to promote disability inclusion in collaboration with all stakeholders to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and address the specific impacts of climate change on PWD.
