The National Human Rights Council (CNDH), in partnership with the Junior Chamber International (JCI Rabat), held the fifth workshop in the training series "Let's Talk about Human Rights" on "Human Trafficking: Combat and Prevention" on October 24, 2024.
During the workshop, participants explored key concepts and definitions relating to human trafficking as outlined in international instruments, as well as its various types and forms. The workshop was chaired by Mr. Abderrafie Hamdi, Director of Protection and Monitoring at CNDH, and facilitated by Ms. Sofana Benyahia, Head of the National Crime Observatory at the Directorate of Criminal Affairs, Pardons, and Crime Detection at Morocco’s Ministry of Justice, Coordinator of the National Commission in charge of coordinating measures to combat and prevent human trafficking (CNCLT).
Ms. Benyahia reviewed major elements of Morocco’s legal and institutional framework for combating human trafficking, emphasizing the initiatives taken as part of the country's firm commitment to addressing this serious human rights violation in line with international standards..
In this context, she emphasized efforts to strengthen the national legislative framework, particularly through the adoption of Law No. 27.14 on combating human trafficking in 2016. She also highlighted the mechanisms put in place to provide a comprehensive response to the impacts of this crime and support its victims, notably with the establishment of the CNCLT in 2019 and the approval of the 2023-2030 National Plan to Combat and Prevent Human Trafficking.
Ms. Benyahia emphasized the role of individuals in raising community awareness about human trafficking and preventing it, stressing the importance of integrating related issues into public discussions and supporting awareness-raising and capacity-building efforts in this area.
This workshop series, taking place every Thursday and set to conclude on November 7, 2024, are part of a joint project between CNDH and JCI Rabat. They are aimed at raising young people's awareness of the various issues and challenges relating to human rights and equipping them with the necessary skills and tools to become proactive civil society members.
