The National Human Rights Council (CNDH) participated, on 24 February 2025, in a high-level United Nations discussion commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and focusing on achievements and ongoing challenges in promoting women’s rights globally. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action is a cornerstone in fighting gender equality and protecting women’s and girls' rights worldwide.

Progress in Women’s Rights in Morocco
At the session, CNDH highlighted significant progress made in Morocco, particularly in:
- Constitutional and legislative advancements supporting women’s rights.
- Increased representation of women in leadership positions across various sectors.
- Reforms in the Family Code based on a bottom-up participatory approach involving extensive consultations.

Represented by Mr. Mustafa Najmi, Director of Human Rights Promotion, the CNDH emphasized that this approach aims to enhance legal protection for family-related rights and foster a fairer system for women’s issues in Morocco.

Persistent Challenges & Areas for Improvement
Despite progress, CNDH noted, in its annual and thematic reports, ongoing challenges that continue to hinder gender equality in Morocco, including child marriage, gender-based violence (GBV), and obstacles facing survivors in reporting abuse and proving their cases due to legal complexities.

To address these issues, CNDH launched a nationwide awareness campaign and published a thematic report (available on its website) that comprehensively examines this challenge.

CNDH also reiterated the need to strengthen the integration of gender-based approaches in all public policies, enhance mechanisms for the protection of women, intensify awareness campaigns to combat gender stereotypes and ensure fair women’s participation in leadership and decision-making roles.

CNDH's Global Advocacy for Women’s Rights

In the international arena, CNDH reaffirmed its commitment to defending women’s rights beyond Morocco’s borders. It shared its deep concern with global human rights institutions regarding violations of human rights and breaches of humanitarian law in several regions worldwide, particularly those affecting women and girls.

CNDH emphasized that now, more than ever, there is a need to uphold and implement the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. It called for stronger international efforts to enhance the protection of women in armed conflicts.
CNDH urged the global community to intensify efforts in holding parties involved in these conflicts accountable, including non-state armed groups to put an end to these violations and ensure women’s rights protection in conflict zones.
