As a national institution for the protection and promotion of human rights, the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) reaffirms its commitment to the #OrangeTheWorld campaign held annually from 25 November to 10 December 2024. This initiative seeks to combat violence against women and girls, victims of gender-based violence and uphold their rights. The CNDH underscored that every woman and girl deserves to live in safety, free from fear and violence.
On this occasion, the CNDH calls on the international community to work collectively toward building a safer and more equitable world for women and girls. It reiterates its commitment to combating gender-based violence and renews its recommendations to the Moroccan government to accede key international and regional instruments, including: International Labour Organization (ILO)Convention No. 190 on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work (2019); Council of Europe (CoE) Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence; Finalizing procedures for ratifying the CoE Lanzarote Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, etc.
The United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, commemorated on 25 November, highlights one of the most widespread human rights violations. The 2024 campaign is being held under the theme: " Every 10 minutes, a woman is killed, #NoExcuse".
This day is part of the UN UniTe campaign. It is a 16 days awareness campaign including activities and events aiming to combat gender-based violence. It continues until December 10, which coincides with International Human Rights Day. This campaign seeks to raise awareness, mobilize global action, promote initiatives and address the root causes of violence against women.
The United Nations defines violence against women as any act of gender-based violence that results in physical, sexual or psychological harm, whether in public or private life, stressing that approximately 736 million women worldwide have experienced some form of violence, particularly from partners.
