The National Human Rights Council (CNDH) in partnership with the African Network of National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI), as Chair of its Migration Working Group, organized an event on November 14, 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan, on the sidelines of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 29).

The event focused on exploring ways to strengthen the advocacy of national human rights institutions (NHRIs) and civil society to protecting migrants’ rights in the context of climate change in Africa.

At this event, the CNDH reviewed the achievements of NANHRI’s Migration Working Group, including its interaction with national and international stakeholders, contributions to monitoring the implementation of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), and recommendations related to strengthening protection mechanisms and preventing violations, particularly in the context of climate-induced migration.

The CNDH underscored the need to place individuals, particularly those in vulnerable situations, at the heart of policies and strategies adopted at the national and continental levels. It emphasized the importance of enhancing the effectiveness of human rights and supporting the role of African NHRIs in monitoring climate-related policies and reducing its repercussions on human rights.

Representatives from NANHRI, Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), and Moroccan Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development took part in this event.
