In coordination with the Regional Human Rights Commission (CRDH) of Casablanca-Settat region, the Network of Lawyers for the Abolition of the Death Penalty will organize a roundtable titled "Abolishing the Death Penalty, a Global and National Process to Protect the Right to Life", in commemoration of the World Day Against the Death Penalty, which is commemorated on October 10 of each year. The event will take place on Thursday, October 11, 2024, at the CRDH's headquarters in Casablanca, Morocco.

This day is the most significant international occasion for opponents of the death penalty to highlight the importance of its effective abolition, given its complete contradiction with the universal values of human rights- primarily the right to life, protection from torture and safeguarding of both psychological and physical integrity. The death penalty is considered as an inhumane punishment, non-deterrent, and does not effectively reduce crime, leading over 140 countries to abolish it, either in law or in practice.

In Morocco, which has suspended the death penalty for more than thirty years, several bodies, led by the CNDH, the Moroccan Coalition against the Death Penalty, the four networks of professors, parliamentarians, entrepreneurs, and all human rights defenders, continue the abolition process that has achieved significant progress.

This event will bring together human rights defenders, legal professionals, and intellectuals who have advocated for, and continue to call for, Morocco to join the ranks of countries that have abolished the death penalty, particularly those who voted in favor of the UN General Assembly resolution for a moratorium on the use of the death penalty.
