The National Human Rights Council (CNDH) established the "Unit for the preservation of memory and the promotion of Moroccan history and its various tributaries" in line with its 2019 integrated vision and the constitutional provisions. It is part of the implementation of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission (IER) actions related to studying the historical context and drawing its political and human rights significance.

This initiative is also part of the implementation of the actions of the Follow-up Committee for the implementation of the IER recommendations related to history and the preservation of memory.
Through the establishment of this Unit, the CNDH aims to promote Moroccan human rights history and its various tributaries. It also intends to strengthen its implementation in curricula and school programs, reflecting a comprehensive strategy mirroring the human rights development process in Morocco.
Additionally, this Unit plays a crucial role in fostering democratic construction and anchoring human rights values within society and the State.
As a support mechanism, it delves into studying models and areas of memory preservation, considering the contemporary history and formulating recommendations for relevant institutions.
The CNDH’s 2019 integrated vision emphasizes the importance of organizing internal archives, updating agreements concluded with various partners and accelerating the transformation of former detention centers into spaces of memory.
The CNDH vision also extends to recommendations on museums-related laws and the National Museums Foundation. It also places emphasis on promoting history and memory preservation as part of the CNDH’s vision relating to the new development model.
The Memory Preservation Unit serves as a hub for objective reflection and research on issues related to contemporary history and its extent. It acknowledges that historical contexts can either pose challenges to the consolidation of the rule of law or serve as anchors democratic practices and the effectiveness of human rights in Morocco.
Through this Unit, the CNDH commits to take initiatives in memory preservation. This includes interacting, researching and debating on various personal accounts and blogs recounting events of past violations. The initiatives could further include socio-economic rehabilitation of memory preservation centers, the establishment of museums, meticulous archival processes, etc.
