The National Human Rights Council (CNDH), the Moroccan Coalition Against the Death Penalty (CMCPM), and the Moroccan Observatory of Prisons (OMP), are organizing a press conference to mark the 23rd World Day Against the Death Penalty in cooperation with national networks working against the death penalty (parliamentarians, lawyers, educators, journalists, and entrepreneurs), and in partnership with Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM) and the Council of Europe (CoE).
Themed “The Death Penalty Protects No One,” the conference will take place on Friday, October 10, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., at CNDH’s headquarters in the Moroccan capital, Rabat.
This event seeks to challenge and dismantle persistent misconceptions that associate the death penalty with enhanced individual or collective security. It also aims to consolidate the positive national momentum toward the complete abolition of the death penalty, particularly following Morocco’s vote in favor of the United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for a moratorium on the death penalty in December 2024.
It also reaffirms that the call for abolition is rooted in the fundamental principle of respect for the right to life, which is an absolute right enshrined in the Moroccan Constitution. The event also highlights that the death penalty stands in contradiction to the protection of this right and to the recognition of the inherent dignity of every human being.
