Moroccan Candidate elected in the UN Committee Against Torture

Morocco’s candidate, Mr. Abderrazak Rouwane, has been elected, on Monday 11 October 2021, to one of the five seats of the United Nations Committee Against Torture (CAT) for the period 2022-2025.
Mr. Abderrazak Rouwane previously worked as the Head of Cooperation and External Relations Division at the Advisory Human Rights Council (CCDH).

The CAT monitors the implementation of States Parties’ obligations under the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. It is composed of 10 independent experts of high moral standing and recognized competence in the field of human rights.

In addition to the State reporting procedure (article 19), the CAT establishes four other to perform its monitoring functions: Inquiry procedure (article 20), considering inter-State communications (article 21), individual communications (article 22), and adoption of General comments.
