UN Headquarters in New York: CNDH Chairperson calls for the effective implementation of migrants’ right to access information as a priority in the process of ensuring effective, safe and continuous protection

Mrs. Amina Bouayach, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) and Vice-President of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) declared that the provision of accurate and timely information is a necessity. It is more than a technical tool that States are committed to provide, in fulfillment of their obligations, following the third objective of the “Marrakech Agreement”. This statement was delivered at one of the four sessions of the First International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) held from 17 to 20 May 2022 in New York.

CNDH Chairperson affirmed that it is a Human Rights priority. Providing information at every stage of migration can be an effective means of preventing the exploitation of migrants and their family members and protecting them from violations, particularly women, girls, children and persons with disabilities, as well as promoting the right of migrants to access information.

Mrs. Bouayach emphasized the importance of providing accurate information to prevent hate speech, racist discourses and forms of discrimination that are influenced by misinformation and migration stereotypes. The CNDH Chairperson also expressed her concern about the misleading political exploitation of migration which she considers “unacceptable”.

CNDH Chairperson said that the project of migration, regardless of its context, motives and framework, is a project of life and a right that States shall protect. The effectiveness of the right to access information for migrants is a fundamental priority in this process, regardless of their situation and their migration context.

It should be noted that Mrs. Bouayach participated in this session at the invitation of the President of the United Nations General Assembly. The four sessions organized within the framework of the IMRF will be the basis of the final declaration on the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).
