ROAD SAFETY, THE RIGHT TO LIFE”, THEME OF AWARENESS MEETING ORGANIZED BY REGIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION OF DAKHLA-AOUSSERD

The Regional Human Rights Commission of Dakhla-Aousserd, in partnership with the Regional Education and Training Academy, organized an awareness and information meeting on “Road safety, the right to life: Commitment-partnership-responsibility”.

Held on February 16, 2013 at the headquarters of the Academy in Dakhla, the meeting saw the participation of several stakeholders, namely principals, students, presidents of civil society associations and representatives of sectors involved in road safety, including the National Security, Equipment and Transport Delegation, the Town Planning Agency and the City Council.
During this meeting, moderated by a member of the Regional Human Rights Commission, papers were presented by the Chairperson of the Commission, Mr. Mohammed Elamine Semlali, the Director of the Regional Education and Training Academy, the President of the Ulema Council, the President of the professional association of taxi drivers, and the Regional Director of the Town Planning Agency.

The different speakers highlighted the importance of protecting the right to life, being the first and most fundamental human right, enshrined in international and national instruments and in the Constitution, but is violated at an alarming rate because of traffic accidents. They called for greater combined efforts in raising awareness about the importance of respecting traffic laws to avoid the killing of innocent people. They also stressed the need to devote further efforts to reduce traffic jam and curb the causes of road accidents.

Mr. Brahim Guennoun, member of the Regional Commission and representative of the judiciary, gave a presentation on “road safety and Moroccan highway code”, in which he dealt with the concept of road safety, Highway Code sanctions, and the regulatory texts against traffic accidents infringing on the right to life.
