INAUGURATION OF A CENTRE FOR SAHARAN STUDIES: TOOL TO PROMOTE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ON SOUTHERN PROVINCES ISSUES

President of the National Human Rights Council, Mr. Driss El Yazami, highlithed the role of knowledge and the protection of tangible and intangible heritage in the preservation of human rights.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Centre for Saharan Studies on Thursday, February 7, 2013, Mr. Driss El Yazami said that the center aimed at encouraging scientific research on Saharan issues, and thus contributing to the preservation of memory, conducting applied and development research and studies and laying the foundations of a serene scientific debate.

The center, Mr. el Yazami explained, aims to conduct multidisciplinary research in the fields of historical knowledge, social and cultural life aspects in the southern provinces and encourage research for development in partnership with local and international stakeholders, providing answers to the different relevant questions, in order to contribute to the development of the southern provinces.

The center will encourage the publication of print or electronic books and of audiovisual products (CDs, DVDs, documentaries ...). It will publish the first anthology of Hassani music shortly, he said.

The participants highlighted the importance of scientific research in general and the Center for Saharan Studies in particular. 16 million Dirhams are allocated to the Centre for the next four years.

Mr. Wail Benjelloun, President of the University of Mohammed V Agdal, Mr. Ahmed Hajji, Director of the Agency for the Promotion and Economic and Social Development of the Southern Provinces of the Kingdom of Morocco, and Mr. Mohamed Soual, Advisor to the CEO of the national phosphates corporate (OCP), represented their respective institutions, which are partners in this project, in this ceremony.

Mr. Lahcen Daoudi, Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Staff Training, and other government officials attended this inaugurating gathering.

The Centre will be chaired by Mr. Rahal Boubrik, university teacher.
