CCDH RETAINS ITS ACCREDITATION AS ‘A STATUS’ NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTION

The Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA) of the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (ICC) recommended in its session, held from 11 to 15 October 2010, in Geneva, the re-accreditation of the Advisory Council on Human Rights (CCDH) as an ‘A status’ national human rights institution. This grade is given to national human rights institutions that are in compliance with the Paris Principles governing such institutions. These recommendations, along with some observations related to the legal background of the Council and issues related to its membership procedures, will be submitted to the ICC for validation.

The Council received an ‘A status’ grade in 2002, after its reorganization in 2001. It chaired the ICC in 2003 and 2004 and was re-accredited an ‘A status’ national human rights institution in 2007.

The Sub-Committee on Accreditation of the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights has the mandate to review and analyze accreditation applications and to make recommendations to ICC Bureau members on the compliance of applicants with the Paris Principles.

The Paris Principles was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1993. It includes several governing principles related to the legal status of national human rights institutions, their independency and pluralism, their missions in the field of human rights promotion, their structures and availability of adequate financial and human resources to achieve their missions.
