International Conference in Nairobi: NHRIs and Administration of Justice

The President of the Advisory Council on Human Rights, Mr. Ahmed Herzenni, and Mr. Abderrazak Rouwane, head of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation attended from 20 to 24 October 2008 the ninth International Conference of National Human Rights Institutions, held in Nairobi on 'National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) and the Administration of Justice ".

The conference, which aims to identify the best practices that NHRIs can use to strengthen the rule of law, to highlight new strategies to improve access to justice and to draw up a guide for NHRIs on the themes of the rule of law and administration of justice, adopted a final declaration stating “the main areas where NHRIs, through the exercise of their mandate, working closely with partners, including the NGOs, may become involved in order to strengthen the administration of justice”, namely the judiciary and access to justice, legal aid providers and systems, law enforcement and places of detention.

The conference, organized by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights in cooperation with the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions (ICC), saw the participation of over a hundred representatives of NHRIs and NGOs around the world.
